After the Agreement The Role of the Iranian People Will Make the Difference

Not much attention being paid to the ongoing role of the people of Iran in making this agreement work. If one looks at what has happened to Vietnam since the war there one can get a pretty good picture of what can happen when peace, free and open markets and cultural opening are employed rather than war. We spent 60,000 American lives trying to force a future on the people of Vietnam and failed but 20 years of trade and - since Bill Clinton and John McCain led us there - more than a decade of robust business relationships and cultural exchange have created a country where (relatively) free markets and the people of Vietnam have embraced many of the ideas and ideals we ostensibly were fighting to allow during the Vietnam war. Compared with Vietnam, the people of Iran are light years beyond where the Vietnamese were at the end of the war. The people are Iran are highly educated, very keen on modern technology and western culture. They are held back only by the backward nature of their religious leaders. Robust economic growth and friendships with the west will give them the incentive and social power to push back against the theocratic leanings of their religious leaders and any involvement they may have in terrorist activities. I believe that in a decade Iran may become one of the closest US allies in the Middle East. Furthermore, having a strong nuclear agreement with Iran will also increase the pressure on Israel to become a signatory to the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty and open their own program up to international scrutiny - which they have avoided until now.
