The Cerberus of Terror

The image of Cerberus, the three headed dog-like monster of Greek mythology who guards the gates of Hell, preventing those condemned there from ever escaping is an apt image for our time. It invokes the fear of terrorism that has so captivated our imaginations and, as a mythological creature, it expresses the likelihood that we will find ourselves its victims.

Yes, it is twice as likely that we will be struck by lightning than by a terrorist. Can you imagine if someone came up with a proposal to spend 10 billion dollars annually to prevent the 29 deaths that occurred  last year from lightning strikes? How would we react to that if it was offered as a proposal by a Presidential candidate? I offer this as a tongue in cheek suggestion, but the numbers are real.

This is not to say that Terrorism should simply be dismissed. Indeed we must take it seriously for the threat that it presents. But we must be clear about the threat it presents.

Terrorism, like the Cerberus, is a three headed beast and we must eliminate all three heads if we are to have peace and justice without sacrificing our freedom in the process. The first two heads are the twin challenges of Isis ("Daesh") and Al Quida.  While they are related, they remain separate challenges and ignoring one while we take the fight to the other is like trying to remove a wrinkle in a rug by pushing on it. The wrinkle simply moves elsewhere.

Despite the bravado of many of the candidates for President and a whole host of Republicans and Democrats, eliminating the twin challenges of Isis and Al Quida will not be easy and will not happen quickly. The more we emphasize violence as a solution the longer it will take.

How we address the challenge depends largely on whether the individuals we seek to reach are already in the "pipeline" or can still learn to dream different dreams. Put another way, it depends on whether hope is still alive or whether the only role models for those we must confront are Bin Laden, the 9-11 terrorists and their ilk. The more we try to "go it alone" or wage war on Islam the longer it will take.

For those already in the pipeline of terror; Those who have already completely rejected values of freedom, equality and opportunity; we have no choice but to confront them in the only language they understand, and with the same uncompromising tone. Resolve must be met with resolve, Violence must be met with violence. Our values must be asserted every bit as forcefully as the values expressed by our enemies.

For those who still can be reached, the vast majority, we must replace dead end dreams with dreams that offer renewal and hope. We must show people all over the planet that we will be there for them when they dream these dreams and this brings us to the third head of the Cerberus of Terror.

We must confront the head of the Cerberus that finds its source among us - expressed through racism, hate and the psychological terror that is the modus operandi of the "Masters of War" who use the violence of the few to justify hatred and the tendency toward violence against the many, without regard to the innocence or guilt.

The first stage of this battle to remove the third head of the Cerberus of Terror may very well be the presidential election of 2016. If the Republicans nominate Donald Trump or Ted Cruise we will surely see an election that presents us with the starkest choice between the dark forces that will lead us into unending conflict and those who will face this challenge as Americans have faced similar challenges in the past - with resolve and a firm eye on the values that have made us the beacon of hope to the world.

Wayne King Images Chosen for Los Angeles Based Linus Gallery "Fauna" Exhibition

Los Angeles-based Linus Gallery recently announced the winners of a call for artists in a juried competition titled "Fauna". Among those images chosen were two images by New Hampshire-based artist Wayne King. Chosen for the exhibition were "Pelican Mindscape" and "Knee Deep in Zebras".

"Pelican Mindscape" is a mixed media image combining elements of photography and painting. The image was printed from a negative through textured glass, hand-painted using Marshall oils and then scanned for output using archival inks in an edition of 100 16" x 24" prints, signed by the artist and available at an affordable $195. Unsigned images are also available from RedBubble.com: http://rdbl.co/1M4cPky

"Knee Deep in Zebras" is a composite monochrome image created from a series of images of Zebras. Three editions of 10 prints each are available, two edition are toned in Blue and Brown respectively with the final a straight monochrome. Original prints are available from the artist at a cost of $495.00 for a 16"x24" signed print. Unsigned open edition prints are also available from Fine Art America: http://bit.ly/1XK6mia.

"I am honored to have had two images selected in this prestigious competition" said King. "The Linus Gallery is one of the most active and progressive galleries on the Web. It may also provide an opportunity for a visit to Lost Angeles where my sister resides - a great added benefit!"

Terrorism and the Fight for the Soul of America

I began writing this piece with a strong rebuke of the "Chicken Hawks" in both the Republican and Democratic parties who, on the one hand, want to appear tough on terror, and on the other hand are so terrified themselves that they are incapable of providing the leadership needed to stand up for American values. But in the last few days I have grown increasingly alarmed at the number of people who are clearly susceptible to their message because they are afraid. It is not a rational fear - after all only 6% of the terrorism in the US since 1970 has been wrought by Muslims. We are far more likely to experience terror from the hands of a gun toting Christian than from a Muslim. But fear is rarely rational and it can only be effectively countered by those who can provide a counterweight to its power. This is not achieved by name-calling or by ignoring the power of fear. Nor can it be countered simply by discounting that fear. The fear is real even when the reason lacks credibility.

Instead we must provide a counter-weight that calls upon what Abraham Lincoln called the "better angels of our nature". Even in the face of what seems like a tsunami of people preying on that fear. . . even in the face of our own fears.

I refuse to believe that the American people will be fooled by those who try to gin up a climate of fear as long as there are enough of us to stand up and speak out.

While young Americans in the military sacrifice to wrest the Middle East from the grip of terror, and people of all ages volunteer for NGOs helping to resettle refugees, I will not remain quiet as the fear-mongers dishonor those sacrifices by calling for a halt to the resettlement efforts or by attempting to stir up a climate of mistrust among Americans.

When Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz suggest we impose a religious test - allowing Christians to be fast tracked for refugee status; or Donald Trump suggested a database of Syrians, I will not be quiet in the face of such anti-American rhetoric.

I am not a pollyanna about this. The threat of terrorism, while numerically small, is nonetheless real and its power is contained in the power of fear to move people to act in ways that are often contrary to logic and their own best interests. We must fight terror, especially those who are already prepared to do us harm, their minds and hearts will not be changed. We must fight them and eliminate them. But we must also begin laying the groundwork for a future where terrorism is a rare or nonexistent event and that can only be achieved by giving the people, especially young people, a reason to hope and dreams that do not involve harming innocent people or following thugs who pose as religious icons.

This is why I am largely in support of the approach that President Obama is taking. Where the fear mongers beat the drums of war and call for escalation, playing right into the hands of Isis the President has a steady and calm hand on the tiller. Where the voices of division and hatred call for American troops to lead the battle, the President insists, rightly, that this must - first and foremost - be a battle waged by the countries of the region with our help.

There is no quick fix to this. We need only look at what has happened when we tried the quick fix of removing Sadam Hussein to see that quick fixes often make matters worse. The mess we created in Iraq and to some extent Afghanistan has led to the rise of Isis and emboldened some very bad players into believing that they can use fear and intimidation to stampede us into a world-wide religious war.

We are too far down the road to expect that ignoring the problem will make it go away. We must be both tough and smart on terror. We must attack the instruments and perpetrators of terror where they can be found but we must also let our values speak loud and clear about what is possible in a world where democratic values, compassion and reason prevail. Do not play into the hands of the terrorists by turning away refugees who will someday be the leading edge of our efforts to create a better world.  If we are smart, they will be the vanguard of a tide that turns the world away from terror as an instrument of change.

Finally, we must expect more from the fourth estate - the media. Never has there been a more important time for members of the media to step up their game - not simply providing reporting that tells each side's story but being willing to weigh those stories in light of the evidence. For example, if Donald Trump can make a patently false statement that people of Arab descent in New Jersey cheered when the twin towers fell, then the media's responsibility is to report not only what he said but also the lack of any credible evidence for his statement - further, they should report on the historic precedents for his behavior: Joseph McCarthy, George Wallace, David Duke and their ilk.

Good journalism is not defined as presenting both sides without regard for where the truth lies. Good journalism is not morally neutral. Good journalism helps us by putting disputes into perspective, by bringing historic context to current events and by vetting the veracity of statements and actions of all parties.

Is all of this risk free? Is there ever a way to be 100% certain? Of course not. All pathways forward carry risk.  I'm willing to risk a little safety for liberty and for peace. Each of us must decide for ourselves and then we must stand and be counted. If we have learned the lessons of history, perhaps our grandchildren and great grandchildren will not be faced with the need to apologize for abandoning our values in the face of fear.

This is not just a fight against terrorism . . .  it is a fight for the soul of America.

Iran Agreement Buys Time Needed for Free Markets to Do What they Do Best

No matter what criticism you listen to regarding the agreement with Iran, currently before the US Congress, the bottom line is that the agreement buys us as much as ten additional years with free markets operating at much more optimal levels. The object lesson of Vietnam following the end of the war there demonstrates that free markets, allowed to operate, bring about change much faster and more effectively than armed conflict.

If one truly believes in the power of the free market whether or not to support this agreement should be a no-brainer: Do we continue down the path toward armed conflict with Iran moving toward the development of a nuclear weapon with a crippling retinue of global sanctions solidifying the power and control of the Mullahs; or, with a little more breathing room, do we unleash the power of the market and our ideas and ideals on the people of Iran and create a wedge that can be driven between the people and the religious zealots.

The Mullahs are not supporting the agreement because they like it, they are supporting it because they are afraid of the power of the people in Iran and they hope to figure out a way to ride out the storm. History is on the side of the peacemakers. Blessed be they.

Recently, through a series of trades and repurchases I have been able to regain control of the edition size of this beautiful image titled "White Horse in a Lupine Dream". I did this because of the number of people who told me they wanted to own a signed original of this particular image but the cost was a bit out of reach for them. In doing this I have been able to increase the number of prints in the edition and lower the cost of a signed original. The signed original is now available at a much more affordable rate of $250. If you are one of those people, here's the link to purchase an original: http://bit.ly/1ZputFk

I have also created a poster of the image that is available for under $20.00. http://rdbl.co/1JvgKUn

After the Agreement The Role of the Iranian People Will Make the Difference

After the Agreement The Role of the Iranian People Will Make the Difference

Not much attention being paid to the ongoing role of the people of Iran in making this agreement work. If one looks at what has happened to Vietnam since the war there one can get a pretty good picture of what can happen when peace, free and open markets and cultural opening are employed rather than war. We spent 60,000 American lives trying to force a future on the people of Vietnam and failed but 20 years of trade and - since Bill Clinton and John McCain led us there - more than a decade of robust business relationships and cultural exchange have created a country where (relatively) free markets and the people of Vietnam have embraced many of the ideas and ideals we ostensibly were fighting to allow during the Vietnam war. Compared with Vietnam, the people of Iran are light years beyond where the Vietnamese were at the end of the war. The people are Iran are highly educated, very keen on modern technology and western culture. They are held back only by the backward nature of their religious leaders. Robust economic growth and friendships with the west will give them the incentive and social power to push back against the theocratic leanings of their religious leaders and any involvement they may have in terrorist activities. I believe that in a decade Iran may become one of the closest US allies in the Middle East. Furthermore, having a strong nuclear agreement with Iran will also increase the pressure on Israel to become a signatory to the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty and open their own program up to international scrutiny - which they have avoided until now.
